Well, the only way I know how to do it, is with my layout (Smooth Sailing, and I have a paid account). I'm actually probably going to be writing up a little tutorial thing for it cos some other friends want to know, as well.
There are also LJ comms for each of the different layouts. So, like if you use the Flexible Squares layout, you can search for that and there are usually instructions somewhere in there with how to customize everything.
I'll have to wait for the tutorial, cause I couldn't figure out how to do it. All I could do was change the background image and that worked out horribly. :(
