Because InterVideo is officially a piece of shit. I hate this. It was all done. Just had to reverse the one clip and version 3 corrupted the file. FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT.
I recommend Sony Vegas if you're looking for a new software. Loads of YouTube tutorials, and it's only about $55 on Amazon for the standard Movie Studio version (you don't need the Pro - I don't use half of what the standard version does). I've found it really stable.
I looked into Sony Vegas last year and OMG. It was waaaaaaaaay too much. I opened it up and it took me like 10 minutes to even just figure out how to import a stupid file. Let alone try and edit a clip? Yeah, that didn't work so well.
I think part of the problem I'm going to run into looking for a new program is that I'm so used to what InterVideo does and how easy to use it is, that everything else is just going to be way over my head.
Oh, no, dude, it really is easy to use once you get the basic functions down. Honestly. If I can work it, anyone can!
Import: Go file -> import media. Browse to the folder where your clips are, double-cick on file. Clip goes into media pool.
Put on timeline: Drag from media pool to timeline.
Edit: Click where you want to split the file. Hit the s key. Clip is cut at that point. Click on the bit you want to get rid of and hit delete.
The one issue you might have trouble with is that it doesn't play nice with Divx files. You need to find yourself special codecs to be able to edit those. But I've managed it, so it can't be too hard.
I'm considering (in the event that I get a windfall this year, which is unlikely) ditching my PC and getting an iMac, and learning how to use Final Cut Express. Hubby has a Pro Mac and it's just awesome. Though he hasn't worked out how to vid on it yet...
I'm sure I could get Vegas going for me. I just need to be patient and actually work with it. Which I can have difficulty doing.... :-) But I don't use DivX files or anything, so that won't be a problem. :-)
I keep hearing that I should be working on a Mac with all the vidding and graphics stuff I'm doing now, but, well, me and Apple products don't get along so well. They tend to stop working if I touch them. LOL
The fantastic thing about Vegas is it can edit .vob files. You don't have to mess around converting your DVD rips to any other format first.
Dude, you sound like you're Apple kryptonite. *g* I had a good look at iMacs today. Am pretty sure I'm getting a 24" 2.88Ghz dual core. It's a lower spec than my current big Dell gaming rig, which is quad-core, but the Dell freezes doing the smallest things, like starting up, so I think a slightly lower-specced Mac could still be far more efficient. And I can run Windows on it so I can still use Vegas.
Luckily, the ripping program I use rips to .avi or .mpg format. I think there's a couple other it can handle, too. Which is great. No converting necessary! :-)
I AM Apple Kryptonite. It's the reason I only got an mp3 player this past Christmas. And NOT an iPod. But I love my little gizmo and that's all that matters. :-)
Oh, really? What programme would that be? I use SmartRipper but I understand it's no longer supported. I like it because I can specify to rip by chapter, but it's always good to have other options.
I have an iPod, but almost brought a Creative Zen instead. Apple are not the be all and end all of portable audio, thankfully.
I use AOA DVD Ripper. In addition to ripping to many formats, you can specify exactly which part of the DVD you want to rip. So, when I rip, I can just rip the 10 seconds that I need or the whole episode if I want. It's only $30 or so to buy. They do have a free version, but it limits your ripping length to 10 minutes. Which isn't bad if you want to just try something out.
I love my Zen. :-D I need to get more stuff on it, though. Which I will do as soon as my laptop is working again. :-P
Ooh, I might try that one. When you say 10 minutes, do you mean 10 minutes for any one clip, or 10 minutes total and then it won't work any more? I wonder if they have a Mac version?
Just 10 minutes clip length. So if you needed 15 minutes of something, you would need to rip it in 2 parts. And there's no expiration to the free version, either. Not sure about a Mac version, but I think it's definitely worth looking into.
Oh, awesome. I use Nero Recode for copying entire DVD's (Griffin likes to put his own DVDs in the player and they get wrecked so we make copies he can play and keep the original safe) but for vid clips, I never rip more than a minute or two.
