So over in iconfest there are some ABSOLUTELY amazing icons being made. I see the ones that have been made for me and my prompts and then I look at what I've made in return and, man, I SUCK. Like, seriously. It's just bad. *facepalm*

You know I am so in awe of people like you who can do icons. I tried to do some for my last piece and that did not turned out so well. So I am amazed how can people do such wonderful things in such a tiny space.

Me too! It's really amazing what some people can do. I've gotten some absolutely FABULOUS icons from over there. I'm totally gonna need to clear out my current user pics and redo them all! LOL

That way lies madness -- and performance anxiety. You cannot compare yourself to others because there will ALWAYS be someone who seems more clever or better at colors or more creative or whatever you think is lacking in your work. All we can do is make icons that we would want to use. I spend a lot of time looking at others' work for inspiration and to push me to try new things but I cannot compare myself because I'd never make another icon.

That said? OMG - there are some AWESOME makers over there making tons of lovely icons. And the prompts are making me want to make icons. I want to put my life on pause so that I can make icons full time in response to some amazing prompts.

I'm so amazed at the work that is coming out of there. Seriously, mind-bogglingly astounded at the amazing stuff that is being made.

Intellectually, I know what I make is OK. I have "won" quite a few icontests, so I guess I'm decent enough. But sometimes, I look at what people make and it's just "How did you do that?" Well, mostly, it might be "How did you think of trying to make that?" Cropping and coloring and all that. I still feel like I'm so very basic with what I do. And I do look through tutorials and lists and check out icon posts for inspiration but I still seem to make like the same thing over and over.... LOL Oh, well. I'll just keep trudging on, doing what I do and maybe someone somewhere will like what I make. :-)

Word. I *completely* identify with this. I often feel like I'm making the same 6 icons over and over and over. I look around and see these astounding, super-clever compositions and I want so badly to have a brain that works that way, all non-linear and creative. I hit a creativity wall. *shrug* I can only do what I can, you know? I just hate to see your admiration of others' work turn into a cudgel with which you beat yourself.

I'm trying not to let that happen. Really. It's really why I enter icontests. To push myself. To keep myself making icons and thinking what can I do better/different. But every now and then, you just get stuck in a rut and sometimes it take awhile to climb out...
