No problem! No bother at all. LJ can be a confusing place.
It's really up to you how you want to post fics. Many people just post them in their own journal. I set up a community just so I could keep better track and have better tagging of my stories. In that case, I post the whole thing there and then just put a link here and in various fandom specific communities back to there.
A link would be: [a href="PAGE URL HERE"]TEXT[/a] with <> instead of [].
One more important thing to know if you're going to post fics or anything of very long length - lj cut. That's where you have the main entry on your journal and then the rest is "hidden" so it doesn't clog up people's friends lists. To do that, you would use [lj-cut text="TEXT"] THE REST OF WHAT I WANT TO SAY[/lj-cut]. Again with <> instead of [].
