So, this story came about because this week was a special 20th Anniversary Theatrical re-release of "Dirty Dancing." And we all know how much this movie means to our favorite show. It really evolved a lot from my original intention as I sat down to write. So, it ended up getting a little schmoopier than I had thought. But it's well-intentioned schmoop, so have no fear. :-) I haven't steered you wrong yet, have I? Anywho, on with the show!
Brian sat in his Corvette outside the MJM Art Gallery where Justin worked. He was supposed to have been off 15 minutes ago, but had probably got wrapped up in something like always. If Justin didn’t get out here soon, though, they would be late. Just as Brian was contemplating going inside and forcibly dragging Justin out, here he came. Wrapped in a scarf to ward of the strangely cold May weather in New York.
“It’s about time,” Brian said as Justin got in the car.
“I love you, too,” he replied back cheekily.
Brian looked over and couldn’t resist leaning in to kiss the smirk of Justin’s face.
“Why won’t you tell me where we’re going?” Justin asked.
“Because then it would ruin the surprise, wouldn’t it?”
Justin regarded Brian for a moment before leaning back in his seat and pouting. But not really. Brian so rarely did anything like this that Justin was actually quite happy with the situation. He just had to pout to keep up appearances.
He looked around curiously as Brian drove them deeper into the city. This wasn’t quite what he was thinking. He was imagining Brian whisking him away to some out of the way bistro for a romantic dinner. But then again, when did Brian ever do what Justin anticipated?
He became even more confused when Brian pulled into a parking garage on 43rd Street. Brian never left his Corvette in garages. It was much too sentimental to him. But then he sat and waited while Brian found the most out of the way spot he could with no other cars around. Typical.
“Let’s go,” Brian said as he turned off the car.
“What are we doing here?” Justin asked.
“Just get out of the car.”
Justin unbuckled his seat belt and followed Brian down the stairs and out onto the street. They walked down the street and around the block to 42nd Street. Justin was utterly perplexed when Brian stopped at the Regal Cinemas and bought two tickets from the teller. They never went to the movies. In the seven years Justin had known Brian, they had never gone to the movies. He’d heard about the few times Michael had managed to drag Brian to the latest comic book superhero thing. But Brian usually preferred to wait until movies were out on DVD so they could be enjoyed in the privacy of their own home. What the hell was going on?
And then Justin saw the poster next to the theater they were headed into – Dirty Dancing. He’d read in the paper about the special re-release for its 20th anniversary. To be honest, Justin was kind of excited. He’d always wondered what Brian’s obsession with the movie was all about. Now he would finally get to see for himself.
They walked into the theater and managed to find a few of the two remaining seats together. The auditorium was packed. They had barely sat down when the lights went out. Justin expected there to be the usual previews and commercials they showed with movies nowadays. But not tonight. As soon as the opening strains of the song started, a loud cheer went up from the audience. Justin let out a little chuckle and looked over at Brian. He suddenly stopped laughing. The façade had dropped and he was just staring at the screen in what could only be described as awe. Justin suddenly saw him as a sixteen year old kid sitting in the theater with Michael, watching it for the first time. Brian turned his head and smiled at Justin before turning back to the screen.
Justin, however, kept his eyes on Brian a little longer and was a little surprised to see him start mouthing the words to the opening song:
“The night we met I knew I needed you so
And if I had the chance I'd never let you go
So won't you say you love me
I'll make you so proud of me
We'll make 'em turn their heads
Every place we go
So won't you please
(Be my be my baby) Be my little baby
(I want it only say) Say you'll be my darling
(Be my be my baby) Be my baby now
(I want it only say) Ooh, ohh, ohh, oh.”
Justin was struck by how much the song seemed to resemble his relationship with Brian. And as he watched the movie, it was strange how they seemed to run parallel in some aspects – complete with a risqué dance.
The first time Patrick Swayze came on screen, with his black t-shirt, leather jacket and sunglasses, Justin heard Brian suck in a breath.
“Damn. He’s still so hot,” Brian whispered.
Justin slid his hand over to Brian’s thigh and squeezed gently. He was learning so much about Brian from this movie. He kept his hand there as a comforting presence as the rest of the movie played. Eventually, Brian moved his hand to twine their fingers together. They stayed that way for the rest of the show.
Justin could totally see himself as Baby – the young daughter (or son) trying to do what’s best for the family, but unable to deny her (or his) true self anymore; the rebel helping them break free. He could see why Brian loved the movie so much.
As the final scene unfolded with Johnny and everyone dancing down the aisle and then Baby running and jumping into the air, Justin wanted to leap out of his seat and cheer. And, okay, maybe he had a bit of a tear in his eye. It was very moving, after all.
As they stood to leave, Justin kept hold of Brian’s hand, who made no move to let go either. They stayed that way on the short walk back to the car. Justin was uncharacteristically silent on the walk, as well. He was still trying to digest everything that movie seemed to tell him about Brian.
The ride back to their brownstone was only filled with the soft sounds of the radio that Brian had turned on to hear the latest news. Justin, meanwhile, was still lost in his thoughts. It all made so much sense now. They were Johnny and Baby. He could see Brian’s no care, no bullshit attitude in Johnny and wondered if that’s where he had learned it. Picked it up as a way to deal with his shitty home life.
When they got home, Brian went into the bedroom to change out of his suit and Justin went over to their CD collection. He began to dig through the stacks, trying to find something he had first seen years ago. As soon as he found it, he stuck it in and hit play. Brian had perfect timing as he came back down the stairs as the song started to play.
“Now I've had the time of my life
No I never felt like this before
Yes I swear it's the truth
and I owe it all to you”
“What are doing?” Brian asked.
“Dance with me,” Justin replied.
“What?”
“Dance with me. Please?”
Justin walked up to Brian and wrapped his arms around Brian’s neck. Brian arms immediately circled Justin’s waist. They began to sway back and forth to the slow music that played.
“You wanna dance, Sunshine?” Brian whispered.
Justin looked up at Brian, not quite sure what he meant. They were dancing.
Then the music changed.
Brian immediately changed his stance and began leading Justin around the floor in some sort of cha cha. As Justin stared up at Brian in wonder, amazed that Brian could move like this, he saw Brian start to sing along with the words:
“I've been waiting for so long
Now I've finally found someone
To stand by me
We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical fantasy.”
Justin was completely enthralled by what was happening. He had never seen this side of Brian before. He was singing to Justin, for fuck’s sake. That was about as ridiculously romantic as it could get.
Justin blinked suddenly and shook his head, confused by the sudden onslaught of images flooding his mind. As Brian twirled him around, moving them effortlessly around the room, he remembered.
A smile lit up his face as he recalled how he had felt when he saw Brian walking into that hotel ballroom so many years ago. Brian did know how to dance. They had danced with such ease and grace it was like they had been doing it for years.
“Justin?” Brian asked. “What’s wrong?” He reached up to wipe the few stray tears that Justin didn’t notice had fallen.
“I remember,” was all Justin could say.
Brian looked at him confused for a moment, before the realization hit him.
“You mean…? You really remember?”
“Yeah,” Justin replied. “It was amazing. You were amazing. Don’t stop dancing.”
Brian picked up where they had left off, dancing them over towards the window, his eyes never leaving Justin’s face. He had dreamt about this moment, wondering how Justin would remember, if he ever did. This certainly wasn’t how he imagined it going.
As the song slowed down again, Justin pulled Brian in closer and it was his turn to sing:
“Now I've had the time of my life
No I never felt this way before
Yes I swear it's the truth
and I owe it all to you.”
Justin pushed back as the song picked up again, laughing and twirling as he and Brian sang the last chorus of the song together. When it was over, they collapsed on the couch, panting for breath and laughing with sheer happiness. Justin was just so happy to have those memories back; all of them, even the bad ones. He knew what a huge step that was for Brian to do that and he realized that he’d never been able to properly thank Brian for it. He leaned in and kissed Brian gently.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
“For what?”
“For giving me the time of my life,” he replied with a grin. “Even if it was ridiculously romantic.”
Brian wasn’t sure how to respond, so he just pulled Justin into his arms and shifted them to lay on the couch. They lay there, quietly listening to a few more songs from the soundtrack, lost in their own thoughts. Justin was trying to rearrange everything he knew about Brian with this new information. Shit, Brian really had loved him back then.
Brian, meanwhile, was trying to sort out his feelings on the whole subject of Justin remembering. He had long ago been resolved to the fact that Justin would probably never remember. Oh, he hoped he would, but there wasn’t much of that left. And now, seemingly out of nowhere, it was all back. The doctors had said it could happen that way. He was…definitely relieved. He was just afraid that Justin might make a bigger deal out of it, and Brian would get uncomfortable, and it would turn out bad. But, no. Justin was not the same little twat he was back then. He would work things out, and everything would be fine.
Eventually, Justin maneuvered himself so he was straddling Brian’s hips and staring down at his face. Brian couldn’t quite read the look Justin was giving him.
“So, where’d you learn to dance like that?” Justin asked.
Brian just shrugged in response, hoping that would appease Justin. But Brian should have known better.
“No, you don’t get off that easy. How do you know how to waltz and cha cha and can you do anything else?”
Brian sighed, knowing there was no way he could get out of this one.
“I took a class with Lindsey back in college,” he explained. “One of her cousins was having some big debutante debut thing, and she insisted I had to learn how to dance properly. I guess it stuck with me.”
“Aww,” Justin cooed. “That’s so sweet. Will you teach me sometime?”
“I guess,” he said noncommittally.
“Good,” Justin replied. “Just don’t start calling me ‘Baby’. I hate that.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it…sweetie.”
Justin glared at Brian for that comment. He had to get back at Brian. So, he slowly moved his hands down Brian’s torso, and started tickling him under his ribs.
“Stop it!” Brian shouted.
“No!” Justin replied. “Take it back!”
“OK! OK! I give! I’m sorry,” Brian said, tipping them off the couch and onto the floor. “I won’t call you ‘baby’ or ‘sweetie’ ever again…honey pie.”
With that, Brian took off up the stairs towards the bedroom.
“Why you…” Justin mumbled before sprinting off the floor, hot on Brian’s heels.
He managed to catch up to Brian just as he made it inside the door. He leapt at Brian, knocking them both onto the bed.
“OK! I was kidding!” Brian said. “Would you stop now?”
Justin finally released Brian, who promptly turned them over and pressed Justin down into the bed. They kissed gently, the teasing over. Justin smiled softly up at Brian, not his usual Sunshine smile, but the one that was reserved just for him. Whenever Justin smiled like that, Brian knew that Justin still loved him.
“I love you, you know,” Brian whispered softly, running his fingers through Justin’s hair.
“I know,” Justin replied.
This time, when Brian kissed him, it held the usual fire and passion they held for each other. Clothes were swiftly removed and they joined together, making love into the wee hours of the morning.
