Layout Help

So, I are an idiot when it comes to doing complicated things with my LJ. And I wanted to put some of those animation things in my sidebar like lots of people have. So, I went to the sidebar customization area where I thought it was all supposed to go and tried to put some in, but nothing happened. :-( Can anyone help?

I use the Smooth Sailing layout. I'll be around tonight if I haven't figured it out yet. :-)
