From Refur's recap of last week's ep found here. Do not eat or drink while reading...

She says:
I get the idea that the “you can’t have connections” speech is basically Sam’s guiding light right now – everyone in his life who he’s ever tried to connect to has ended up dead

And I think this is a very true and accurate observation. It goes into more detail at the post, but this is the main point I'm getting at.

Could this be why he feels so "safe" with Ruby? She's already dead, so she can't die on him. Right? I mean, it's still completely fucked up, but maybe there's a reason?

I'm not sure what I'm getting at here, really. But yeah...

OK, I need to get back to iconing... I both love and hate open challenges...

I'm seeing that "can't have connections, cut them all loose, only count on family" speech completely different than everyone else is.

That is almost word for word what Dean told him in Skin. So I don't see it as anything other than Sam trying to convince himself - and maybe Dean - that's he's just become what Dean wanted him to be all along instead of something 'bad' or 'evil'.

I definitely see it as Sam convincing himself of that, too. But I think maybe I saw Dean's reaction a bit differently: if Sam is saying that and believing it and LIVING it, then Dean has failed. Dean never wanted that for Sam. Yes, he wanted Sam with him and saving people, hunting things, the family business, etc. I think when Dean gave Sam that speech he did need make Sam realize how dangerous their "job" is to other people. But Dean never wanted Sam to give up on people. Which Sam basically has.

So, maybe Sam isn't "evil" or "bad" but he's definitely not who Dean wanted him to be. I think somewhere deep down, Dean always imagined Sam would go back to college and get out of this life.

Does that make any sense?

I think Sam was every 'good' thing Dean couldn't see in himself, and so he projected that onto Sam. And now that he's actually seeing Sam for who he is and who he's become, Dean's at a loss because he doesn't want to recognize the changes that have happened or even WHY they've happened.

Exactly. This new Sam, Dean has no idea what to do with him, how to interact with him, how to relate to him at all. Because this isn't the Sam he left when he died. And there's been no time for him to reacclimate himself to his "new" brother. Ever since he's got back, it's been Run Run Run Stop The Apocalypse! Can he have a moment to breathe please?

On top of dealing with his OWN PTSD and associated guilt for what he did. Poor bastard.

Ya know, I don't think he trusts Ruby, but he is using her to get what he wants. The only thing she's got going for her is that he's currently addicted to her blood, but I'm pretty sure HE thinks he's got all that under control...

Yeah, there's no way he trusts Ruby. But there's something there that he's clinging to.

As long as Ruby dies in the finale, I don't care what else happens.... :-P

Heh. I'm going to predict that the intervention Bobby and Dean do with Sam isn't going to take. And worse than that, Sam *will* leave Dean behind (to protect him) and go with Ruby to 'finish this', and either he'll power up with her blood again or come to the realization that he never needed it in the first place.

Sadly, I 100% completely agree with this.

Could it be also that he thinks that using Ruby is means to an end? To take his revenge on Lilith for what she has done to Dean and he does not feel guilty in using Ruby to achieve his goal. Goal number 1 in his mind nowadays is Lilith's head on a plate.

Yes, there is that. Maybe I'm just overthinking things....
