Today I shall bring you my favorite novel from my favorite author: LA Requiem by Robert Crais. I've mentioned him before. If you're a fan of mystery/crime/detective novels he's someone you should look into. I really like his writing because he strikes that very sensitive balance with the serious/gritty stuff and humor. His main character, Elvis Cole, is sarcastic and witty. Always ready with the one-liners. This novel actual centers on his friend and partner, Joe Pike. Joe is much more of a mystery. He doesn't speak much but can say volumes with the twitch of his eyebrow. This novel gave us loyal readers an inside look at this very enigmatic character and I love it. It's the one book I will read over and over again and never get sick of.

No one I know knows who he is either. Hell no one I worked with in a fricken bookstore knew who he was! But yeah...I love most of his stuff...is it an Elvis book in January? Or a Pike? Those are about all I read by him. I've tried a couple of others, but wasn't as impressed. *nods* I've loved him since the first...just the way he writes...I can't even really explain it. But I can remember combing stores looking for his stuff and trying to explain to clerks and getting blank looks (especially when I was like 15/16 and "why are you looking for a book like that?" "dude I was reading adult books when I was like TEN!")

It's another Pike novel! Called The First Rule. There's some info on it up on his website (linked above). He's started doing book tours when new stuff comes out. If he comes anywhere near you and you can go, I highly recommend going to see him. He's very cool in person.

I did like the other two books he wrote, too. Carol Starkey, who has started popping up in recent novels, is from Demolition Angel. She's pretty kick ass. :-)

WooHoo! Neato! I'll have to make sure I check it out when it gets released. And yeah...it always seems like when people visit or stuff it's either too far away or when I'm working. Or in a place where I'm not comfortable going. I'm not claustrophobic...but I do have issues with loads of people in small enclosed places. (Which made working in the store I did interesting at holiday time--my manager used to make sure I was in the other store so I could have LOTS of space after watching me panic one day--thankfully he was a friend in addition to my boss).

*nods* I think I read that one, but wasn't as impressed...maybe I'll try it again.
