There's gotta be an easier way

So, I did this the other day, but it took like 20 minutes and I'm not even sure what I did to get it. Anyway, what I'm trying to do is make an animated icon that has a "frame" around it. Like the one I am currently using. And make it black & white, adjust brightness, etc. I have the mov file and I open it in Image Ready (7.0, if that makes a difference), but I can't really figure out how to edit it in any way other than size. Help? :-)
