switch842Apparently, I'm in the minority, but I fucking LOVED this episode. Not that it's not without its problems, but still. AWESOME!!
Meta-ing as I rewatch
Wayward Son recap? This how you know you're watching Supernatural. Oh, yeah.
OK, Bobby's question to Dean about what he's more afraid of, losing or losing his brother? Um, losing his brother. You do know who you're talking to, right, Bobby?
I love the narration. I know it can be a cliche and kind of silly. But I like it. And I LOVE the use of the car. It IS their home. No questions about that.
And Chuck! LOVE Chuck. We'll get to more on him later.
This scene with Sam is a HUGE leap for Dean. He recognizes that he can't LET Sam do anything. Just be there whatever he decides what to do. And giving up his "job" of watching over Sam, what does that make Dean then? Who is he? As he says, he has a lot of growing up to do. And I love Dean's faith in his brother. Because that's what it is. He has FAITH that Sam can do it when the time comes. It's gonna be scary as hell, but Sam can do it.
I'm glad we didn't see the beginning of this scene with the demon blood. Though, it is kind of curious, was there any torturing going on? Or did they just strap them up and drain them?
Oh, man. Detroit. Ugh.... Detroit is not a good sign.
Poor Cas. Now human. What does that mean for him? How does he cope? How CAN he cope?
Oh, Sam. This is where I started getting misty. He knows he's going to his death, but he's facing it head on. He's just.... I don't know if brave is the right word. Maybe it is. Whatever it is, he's got balls of steel.
It's interesting that Dean never says out loud that he promises to do what Sam asks. I don't think he can. Promising not to try and get Sam back? I mean, that's what the Winchesters do. One of them dies and the other saves him. And I don't know if Dean is capable of living the normal apple pie life. Again, more on that later.
And Cas, still unable to grasp human emotions and conventional etiquette. Even after all this time. Trying to lie to Sam and failing miserably.
Dean playing with Legos in the car. Sammy's little army man. I love those things. It really does instill more of that "home" into the car.
Sarcasm? With the devil? Come on, Dean....
Super powerful Sammy is really fucking creepy.
And here we go.....
And there it is. This version of Lucifer!Sam is much better than how he played in in The End. That one always seemed a little camp to me. But here, Jared does an absolutely amazing job. Especially in the scene with them talking to each other in the mirror. I am still kind of surprised that Sam never learned to control or channel his anger in a better way. Or any way, really. How long has he been told that it was his anger that would let Lucifer in? (Nice Star Wars joke, BTW, Luci.) And he's still a pissed off brat inside. I mean, yeah, he's got stuff to be angry about for sure. But, walking around pissed off like that ALL THE TIME is not good.
Very interesting that Sam's been surrounded by demon's his whole life keeping tabs on him.
And Dean will not give up. Even when it's right in his face, he wants to face it head on. And it's so sad that Castiel doesn't believe it can be stopped. As far as he's concerned, the game is over. Checkmate. The devil won. But not Dean. Dean WILL NOT give up. And that's what I love about him. Even against completely impossible odds, he will not just sit down and wait. He charges in and faces it all head on.
"It never occurred to them that, sure, maybe they never really had a roof and four walls. But they were never, in fact, homeless." OMG YES! More tears because it is so, so true. They had each other and the car and that's all the needed.
The showdown is really soon. For some reason, I guess I thought it would take longer. And how appros po that it all ends in Lawrence. It's interesting, looking at a map. Lawrence is almost right smack dab in the middle of the US. Probably as close to it as you can get.
And Dean will not let Sam die alone. Again, against all odds, with no good outcome even in sight, Dean charges in head first. He will always be there for Sam. He may not have to take care of him anymore, but he will still be there.
Interesting that Adam is dressed like Dean. I think this scene actually loses some of its intensity because it's Adam. If it had been Dean, this would have been so much more epic. I wonder if this is something that got changed with the season 6 pick up. If this really was going to be the series finale, can you imagine a better way to go out than brother vs brother? I mean, in the script you could change "Lucifer" and "Michael" for "Sam" and "Dean" and the dialogue would still make sense. With it being Adam, it's not quite as dramatic as it could be.
And I am ever so slightly ticked we didn't get some epic showdown between Lucifer and Michael. I mean, that would have been completely EPIC. And Dean coming in, blasting Def Leppard. Really, it should have been Zepplin or AC/DC, but I guess I'll take what I can get.
"Hey! Ass butt!" LOL Go Cas!! And the molotov cocktail of holy oil. Holy shit.
And this is where I completely lost it. Sobbing mess. Haven't been this much of a wreck since Fraiser died on SG1. I mean, Cas exploding, Bobby getting his neck snapped. Dean getting the ever loving shit beat out of him. And just taking it. Not even trying to fight back. HEART WRENCHING. Even now, again, I can't even....
And the car does it. I don't care how cheesy and stupid it may be. This is one of the most amazing things this show has done. It's what this show has always been about. These two boys and this car and what it means. It IS Family. They don't have a conventional home, but they don't need one. They have each other and that is enough.

That make-up job on Jensen is amazing and awful and creepy. *shudders*
So the cage meant to hold one archangel, now holds two. Can it? I want to know what happens down there!!
And Dean is COMPLETELY broken. His brother is gone. EVERYONE is gone. He's all alone.
And Cas to the rescue. I do like that we got Cas back. I mean, he is an angel. Although, this is probably going to sounds absolutely horrible, but I almost kind of wish that Bobby hadn't been resurrected. It kind of negates a lot of stuff with everyone back. Again, it seems like this is something that may have been changed with the season 6 pick up.
I hope season 6 explores more of Cas' storyline. I mean, he became completely human, died (a couple times) and then got all his angel mojo back. And is now the sheriff? That's quite a lot for any being to go through. "What would you rather have, peace? Or freedom?" For Dean, no question, Team Free Will all the way. But to get that, some sacrifices have to be made.
OK. The big one. Dean and Lisa. I will fully admit I am a complete romantic and this does not bother me as much as it seems to bother most of fandom. I am also one of the fans that believes Ben to be Dean's son. But, I do have some problems with this. I wish he had gotten a little more of Dean's feelings on Lisa building up to this. More than just the two brief appearances we got. She really was sort of a throw away that we're now supposed to believe is the love of Dean's life? I'm not sure she is. And I don't know if Dean can ever really settle down like Sam wanted him to. I mean, he always mocked Sam for thinking he could ever live a normal life. And now he's going to try and do that? Become a "husband" and father? Take a job at a garage? Dean would get bored out of his skull! If Lisa is still around in season 6, whenever that picks up, I don't want her to be permanent. I like the idea of Lisa possibly being some sort of home base that Dean could go back to between hunts. But I don't think Dean can stop hunting. It's WHO HE IS. It's not just a job. Dean is hunting. If he just stops, then who he is? What good is he?
And the other big debate: Sam. The popping streetlight and crackling thunder, my initial reaction is that's still Lucifer!Sam. At the very least, that's not the Sam we know. Is he a ghost? A poltergeist? Good? Evil? Something else entirely? I guess we'll find out next season.
Now. Chuck. Again, my initial reaction was that Chuck = God. There's a few things. Knowing things he maybe shouldn't have known, even as a prophet. The very drastic change in physical appearance at the end. The clean grooming, the crisp white shirt. Chuck usually was very greasy and unkempt. However, if Chuck is God, that throws some MASSIVE plotholes into the story. Some of which being Dean's pendant, his utter terror at meeting Zachariah and the other archangel that protects him. So, if we are supposed to believe that Chuck is God, I would like to propose that he was only God at the end there. When Dean needed to know the very important details.
If this had been the series finale, I would have been very happy. So, there ya go.

Date: 2010-05-15 09:59 pm (UTC)I don't think we can write Castiel off entirely. He's been built up way too much to just be done with him. Perhaps he'll go back to a recurring status as opposed to a regular, and I would be fine with that.
