So, there are lots of theories and ponderings floating around about Sam and why he's acting the way he is and what could possibly be wrong with him.

My favorite current theory was put forth to me by [livejournal.com profile] brihana25 (see post here). In it, she states that she believes Sam is actually suffering from some sort of fractured personality. That he's basically two people - the Sam we know and love who would want to save Dean and some kind of Not!Sam who is just really curious about what happens when someone turns into a vampire. Kinda cool, right? I think so.

Then, I was just talking with [livejournal.com profile] whisper99 in chat and we had the following conversation:

whisper_elf2006: I am wondering if he's not Adam
Switch: that's interesting. they get mixed up in the cage?
whisper_elf2006: i guess
whisper_elf2006: sam would be nice enough to give Adam his body
Switch: Oo! Or...
Switch: what if it's a combo of that and bri's theory?
Switch: his split personality is Adam and Sam
whisper_elf2006: oh snap
Switch: huh? huh?
whisper_elf2006: wow
Switch: dude, if i'm right??
whisper_elf2006: that, yeah, totally I could see that
Switch: that would be AWESOME
whisper_elf2006: that would be fucking fantastic!
whisper_elf2006: except that would make adam a dick
whisper_elf2006: lol
whisper_elf2006: but still
whisper_elf2006: very good possibility
Switch: well, adam kind of was a dick
whisper_elf2006: it would kinda fit, dont you think? With Sam having run out after Dean, you could see how he was pretty frantic, right? Then he gets there and it's like he changes, has this look (lustful IMO) on his face when Dean is getting vamped
Switch: Yes
whisper_elf2006: it could have been Sam running frantic, then Adam taking over right at that moment
whisper_elf2006: oh damn
whisper_elf2006: and also, Sam not remebering the conversation with gramps
Switch: Yup
whisper_elf2006: and if Sam has no idea
whisper_elf2006: maybe Sam and Adam are sort of mixed up together somehow, so they aren't exactly distinct personalities
whisper_elf2006: Sam would have wanted to leave Dean alone, Adam wouldn't have cared one way or the other
Switch: I must tell Bri!!!
whisper_elf2006: I like that theory
whisper_elf2006: that's my new canon :)
Switch: thank you :D
Switch: woohoo!!
whisper_elf2006: hee :)
Switch: i am a GENIUS

So, there ya go. The reason that Sam is acting so strangely is because he's actually Sam and Adam. He's Sadam. LOL :-D

I actually kind of liked Adam. He certainly wasn't an angel... well, except for when he was Michael, but that's when he was very much a dick. There might be something to the theory, as well as to bri's. Maybe it's something in between. Maybe something altogether different.

I can certainly imagine any stint in Hell, brief or not, Christian version or other, would definitely have an impact on one's psyche. I can buy Sam splitting his personality to deal with it, it's just that I don't buy that excuse being played out on a show like Supernatural. Maybe on Oprah. Merging personalities is something they would do. Whose is another matter. Maybe it was Adam, who didn't care. Maybe it was Michael, who hated Dean for getting in the way. Maybe it was Satan, still lingering, even in minuscule parts. Uriel? Raphael? Somebody yet to be introduced?

The split personality thing definitely makes sense to me in light on Live Free... and all that we saw happening there. The Adam thing is just another added layer since they went into the pit together and who knows what that might do to a person. Especially since their physical bodies went to hell (supposedly). It's definitely a head scratcher...

Thank you! :-)

I gave it a little more thought and I think a good chunk of my motivation for hoping it might be Adam is just that there's been NO MENTION of him at all. And that's kind of a shitty thing to forget about. He jumped in the pit, too. What the hell happened with him?

I so want this to be true makes sense to me Adam also never cared for Dean and would have risked him to get the Alpha

As much as I like Adam, I do think he has a bit of a grudge against them, if you will. I mean, here he was living a normal life and then he gets dragged into this crazy life and KILLED. Then brought back to life to fill some role in the apocalypse cos Dean wouldn't and then he "died" and went to hell. Again. So, yeah. He might have a desire to get back at Dean a little bit.

Ooh... I really like the "split personality" theory. I've heard a few variations of it from a few other flisters, but one of those personalities being Adam? Very intriguing :D

It just seems plausible that he's got a couple of personalities in there with the abrupt change in behavior we keep seeing. Even in The Third Man, there were the moments he was more like Sam with the brotherly banter (like the "were you racing me?" line to Dean), and then the scene where he didn't even bat an eyelash while Cas was torturing that kid for info.

Really curious to see how it will play out!

There is just such a disconnect sometimes between the Sam that we're seeing in scenes there's got to be something going on to explain that.

This is a really interesting theory....

I'm not convinced that something didn't happen to Sam during his time in hell. I know he wasn't down there very long, wasn't it like 5 days or something? And if we know that one month equals ten years down below and 5 days is 1/6 of a month *calculates* it comes out to 1.666667 (notices all the sixes) years.

To me, that's still enough time for Sam to have endured some pretty heavy torture from Lucifer or Michael or even Adam.

So many possibilities, so little time.

I'm sure SOMETHING happened to Sam down there. It really is a matter of what and I also think what/who brought him out of hell and WHEN that happened. If he was ripped out in the middle of being tortured or something, that act alone could have been enough to cause some kind of break.

I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!!! LOL

I like the split personality theory, but idk about it being Adam. Because while I can see him being curious about the effects, I can't see him having that motivation to hunt down Alphas, and this current very strange acting Sam seems to have some sort of an agenda. In some ways, he IS Sam, just with all his empathy and compassion removed, because Sam has a cold SOB streak in him. As a lot of people have pointed out, Sam is 9000 times more like John than Dean, with the obsessiveness and goal-oriented tunnel vision. We've seen with "Mystery Spot" that with enough trauma, Sam can turn into a machine. I don't think it's solely PTSD at work, mind you. I do think there is something literally wrong with Sam. Perhaps that is the issue: most of Sam came back, but not his "soul," the compassion that tempers the inherent coldness in him.

Well, "Adam" could be being influence by Grandpa Sam and possibly going along with that because he though that's how Sam might act. And the longer he's topside, the more he develops his own "personality" to go with that.

I so agree with you about Mystery Spot Sam and that potential is there. But what we're seeing now doesn't seem to be quite that. I don't think even MS Sam would just stop and watch (with glee) while Dean was turned into a vampire. There is something VERY WRONG with the Sam we're seeing.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Well, either way, I just hope they don't forget about Adam. -_-

Oh yeah, I'm with you in thinking that there is something seriously wrong with Sam, like he's missing some bits, or he's not himself entirely. URGH I HOPE THEY TELL US SOON.
