The Urbana Adventures (& Mother's Day)

We had everyone over here for Mother's Day today. It was very nice. I got a grill! Woot! Yes, I actually asked for a grill for Mother's Day. Found a very nice, small, cheap one at Home Depot the other day, so it is MINE! We grilled burgers and brats, had some fruit salad, pasta salad, deviled eggs. All that good stuff! It was delicious. I am stuffed.

And now, our adventures to Urbana...

The day started well, left here on time (mostly) and made decent time down to Chicago for stop #1 to pick up [livejournal.com profile] rainbowmcgee09. She hopped in, we hooked up the GPS and we continued on our way to get [livejournal.com profile] queeneve_84. Got a tad turned around as we went the wrong way when 90/94 split. Luckily, the GPS saved us and we didn't lose too much time getting to [livejournal.com profile] queeneve_84's house. And then finally, we were on our way!

The drive was actually quite pleasant. It's one of the longest drives I've ever made, so I was a little nervous. But the directions were great and the theater was easy to find. So, we get to Urbana and find the theater. It's still early, just before 4:00 and the doors were opening at 5:30. We decide that we needed Red Vines!! So, back to the GPS to find us a Wal-Mart. We ended up at Target instead as the GPS, for some reason, pointed us to Sam's Club and not Wal-Mart. Quick stop there, and then at Steak and Shake for some preshow food and we were back at the theater! It was about 5:00 and the thunder clouds were rolling in. Which would be first? The rain or the doors opening? If you guess rain, you're right!!

Luckily, we were right at the end of the line that was still under the overhang so we did not get soaking wet. Excellent! So, then the doors open and we head in. The place is OLD. Seriously. It was OK. It kind of had that old place smell like built into the walls. You know, stale and dead air. And it was HOT! As soon as you walked into the main room it was just HEAT. Blech. So, we find a place on the floor (standing room only) and wait for the show to begin. StarKid had tweeted just before I left that they were going to be on first so we should be sure to get there early. This was great news to me for several reasons: 1) I had no idea who any of the other acts were; 2) Standing for 3-4 hours is not so easy for me at the moment; 3) It was going to be a long drive back and I wanted to get home before midnight. Well, someone lied to StarKid. They were not first. However, the acts we saw before StarKid came on were quite entertaining and I did rather enjoy myself.

So, I just have to say this cos it was just so odd (to me). So, we're standing around waiting for the show to start and I have never felt more conspicuous in my life. I was looking around at everyone near me and I probably had a good 8 years and 8 inches on them all. Seriously. I stuck out like a sore thumb. It was strange.

Anyway, finally STARKID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did take video of their performance, but I haven't had time yet to watch it and edit it to separate the songs or anything. It may very well suck because it was LOUD in there. So loud. Ugh. Anyway, they opened with Voldemort Is Going Down which was fabulous. Then Joey and Lauren stepped up to the microphones and, I think you can guess what song they did. That's right. Granger Danger! Yay!!! Something happened near the end and Joey flubbed up a bit, but it was still great to get to see it live. Then they did a song I didn't recognize. Then Dylan and Joe did the Dumbledore/Umbridge duet from AVPS. Then Kick It Up A Notch from Starship. Something else I couldn't place which then segued into the end/reprise of Going Back To Hogwarts. It was epic. It was only 20 minutes but it was very much worth it.

Sadly, we didn't get to meet any of them, but that's OK. It was just great getting to see them live on stage. I am now definitely getting tickets to the next show they do in Chicago now. Whatever it is. Maybe they'll give Starship another run? *shrug*

So, that's that! Had a great time and am very, very firmly a StarKid For Life. :-)
