Yes, Rachel Berry works hard. Yes, Rachel Berry is extremely talented. This is not in dispute.
Here's what I am disputing:
Of the four major accomplishments we've seen of Rachel's on-screen (and that I can remember off the top of my head), she has actually only earned one truly and completely on her own. The other three were all the results of some sort of special consideration or people changing the circumstances so she has to win.
Let's break this down:
This is where Glee utterly failed for me last night. The results of Kurt and Rachel's NYADA auditions basically add up to one thing: Hard work and pulling off the performance of your life when it matters means absolutely nothing. Harassing and annoying people until they cave into you just to get you to go away, however, will get you everything you ever wanted. Yeah, that's a wonderful message to be telling kids.
Also, where the hell was Kurt's reaction? We got EVERYONE ELSE'S reaction to what they were doing after college. Kurt's final line was, "I didn't get in." Where was him telling Blaine? Or his dad? Where was Finn and Kurt consoling each other over their broken dreams?
Yes, it's The Rachel Berry Show. Always has been, whatever. But you don't give Kurt the storyline he got and not have it payoff. That's just sloppy, lazy, outright bad writing. I almost hope Chris and Darren don't come back to Glee so I don't have to keep watching it next year.

- The "Defying Gravity" solo. This was "given" to Rachel because Kurt purposefully botched the note at the end. We can't really say for sure what would have happened if Kurt hadn't done that, but it would have at least been a much more fair and even decision.
- West Side Story. This is the one she really did get because she was the most talented and best for the part. Not arguing that one.
- Prom Queen. GIVEN to her by Santana and Quinn because they felt sorry for her. No one voted for her. Not one single write-in vote. I'm sure the only people not going "...the fuck?" when Figgins made the announcement were Santana and Quinn.
- NYADA. She BLEW her audition. She completely and utterly tanked and fell flat on her face. However, she decided to stalk and harass Carmen into giving her special consideration. Which she got, because she's Rachel Berry and everything always goes her way. And she did perform extremely well at Nationals. HOWEVER, she did not when it counted. When it really mattered, Rachel failed. Meanwhile, Kurt who gave the most spectacular audition anyone has ever given was left out in the cold.

But, also, Rachel has never been on my list of favorite characters. I kind of feel like I'm in agreement with most of McKinley in just finding her mostly annoying and wish she would go away.
So, yeah.
