LOL Wow. Some people are rude and so judgmental. Cool topic, though. I had no idea that some cashiers nowadays weren't *allowed* to say anything to the customers. I would prefer the cashier say something to a customer than another customer, because that's like someone on a message board correcting someone else when they're not a mod. *g* It's just poor etiquette, and I don't want to be the kind of person who goes around correcting other people all the time like I'm so perfect (because definitely not! *g*). hehe
I have to admit, though, that I wouldn't get in a line with even one extra item, but that's because I worked as a cashier for a number of years many years ago, and it was awful! Customers would yell at me for letting in someone with too many items ahead of them. Customers would yell at me if I told them not to get in line with too many items. (They'd actually say, "What are you doing anyway?" because they didn't think about the fact that someone could come up behind them with just a loaf of bread and they'd be pissed at *me* not at the other customer! *g*) And sometimes I had bosses who'd tell me to count every order and not let anyone in line because customers were complaining about me letting in people with too many items, and other bosses who'd scold me for being such a stickler--sometimes both types working at the same time.
I remember one time so many customers yelled at me--and then the immediate boss yelled at me, too, that I closed out my line and was made to go talk to the manager and I started crying like an idiot--and I never cried back then. It was so embarrassing and awful.
I just can't bring myself to do that to someone else (the cashier)--to put him/her in that position, no matter how long the lines are. OTOH, I never would have noticed if someone had one extra item, for the most part--especially if it was a large amount like a 15-item lane. Even when I had bosses telling me to count, I usually didn't because it was too difficult when I had so many other things to think about. If I counted *as* I was scanning the items, what would be the point? LOL I liked the advice of some cashiers that customers shouldn't ask or joke about having too many items. Just get in line and hope nobody else notices. *g*
(Regarding that incident: I was lucky that my boss really liked me, because he didn't fire me. Instead he let me have a break and put me to work doing some easy stuff and then told them not to put me on express again for a long while. *g* This was years and years ago and I was such a sweet little thing back then. hehe)
One thing that bugs me around here is that there is one store that has "cash only" express lanes. No debit cards! Isn't that weird? So even if I have only one item, I have to wait behind one or even 2 or 3 people with large orders. Needless to say, I don't go to that store that much any more.
Hopefully, I'll never have to be a cashier again either. *g* It brings back many nightmarish memories. *g*
