I need a new vid making program

I used to use InterVideo, but that has decided to just stop working. I even uninstalled and reinstalled. Nothing. It just keeps freezing and won't do anything. I had a trail of Adobe Premiere, but that expired. I am NOT using the Windows Movie Maker piece of crap. So, any suggestions for FREE video editing software would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of my friends sing the praises of the Sony Vegas Movie Maker. I don't know much about it but what I've heard has been positive.
