Random thought re: Sam's powers
Apr. 3rd, 2010 08:39 amThere is a discussion thread over on Wayward Son (which is a new message board that y'all should join) about Sam's powers and what they mean, how did they develop, etc.
It seems that Sam's main "power" is telekinesis. We've seen him move objects and people. If we go with the theory that YED didn't give the special kids powers, just enhanced what they have, could we then say that Sam's exorcising abilities are a really highly advanced form on telekinesis?
Think about it - the demon does have an actual physical presence inside the host. So, Sam is using a concentrated form of telekinesis to remove it.
I have no idea what this means other than trying to make sense out of some really freaky thing that Sam can do. *shrugs*

In some opinions, God will be John Winchester [They can't find him in Heaven? They can't find God on Earth?]. Could this early power be blessed instead of damned?
Then, of course, Sam had to go and become all addict-y and pervert his powers and so on and so forth.
Does that make sense outside of my head? /:

Sure, exorcising the last one turned out to be a Very Bad Idea, but it wasn't anything really different than he had been doing before. And the clairvoyance seems to have gone away. I think Sam mentioned those visions stopped when YED died. Which is interesting as that seems to imply that that particular power was directly received from him and perhaps not an inherent ability.
Sam's powers have always intrigued me. Especially Dean's vehement objection to them. I mean, Dean would really rather kill an innocent human that merely send the demon possessing them back to hell? It makes me wonder sometimes that if Ruby hadn't been around and Sam had just discovered those powers on his own, would Dean have been more on board with it? It's an interesting thought....

Of course, prophecy is not inherently a blessed gift. It's also seen as a demonic one, though usually the visions are in some way altered to violence.
I've always wondered that too. It seems to me that Dean's more angry over Sam exploring his powers with Ruby than him exploring them overall. When they discuss the situation without Ruby in context, his arguments seem almost feeble and half-hearted, yet as soon as she is brought up, Dean begins objecting and detailing how she's only trying to lead him astray and means to betray him.
He reminds me of a small child refusing to share a toy even if he himself doesn't wish to play with it at that exact moment.
