I want to make some animated icons from the latest Leverage ep. I now have Photoshop CS4 which is much easier for editing video files into icons. However, even at only a second long, the file size is so big that when I optimize it to 40K it looks like absolute shit. In Image Ready 7, there was a way that when you imported a video file you could skip some frames to help make the file size smaller. But I cannot figure out how to do that in CS4 and my Google-Fu is not giving me anything back. Can this be done? If so, help? :-)

Ok as I recall it is this:

File > Import > Video Frames to Layers

Find the file you want and hit Load

To extract just a piece of the video for the GIF, select Selected Range Only.

Select where your clip starts and ends

Also remember to check the little box beside the "Limit to every __ frames". that will cut down on the file size.

Let me know if this helps. "Who suddenly realised that I should get off my backside and do some animations" :D

I tried that, but I don't have the "Video Frames to Layers" option under the Import menu.... :-(

Really? It should be under the File tab. Two thirds of the way down.

Yeah. I have the Import option and then from there it's "Variable Data Sets", "Notes" or "WIA Support." :-(

Hun jsut a thought, is there any chance that you are running the the 64-bit version of CS? The Video Frames To Layers option isn’t available in the 64-bit version of CS4. Which kinda sucks.

In that case you might want to try the solution I posted below.

Another solution.

Open file

Select Quicktime Movie, then open your vid file.

Click the options in the animation window.

Select “Flatten Frames into Layers”

Click the options again to select “Make Frames From Layers”

Select the animation options

Choose “Convert To Frame Animation”

Following those steps probably will make it work.
