Well, shoot

I may have ruined my cast iron skillet.

I made a pork roast in the crock pot yesterday. First I seared it in the pan, like I do. Well, this morning, I looked at it and it still looked absolutely filthy. Hubby had cleaned it, so not sure why. I decided to try the thing where you put water in it and then boil the water to get all the gunk off. Well, I, uh, kinda forgot about it and it boiled dry. *facepalm*

I'm attempting to re-season it in the hopes that I just "cooked" all the seasoning off it. *fingers crossed*

You might need to scrub clean the pan, and then re-season it a couple times.
Also, warm olive oil is a better way to clean things than boiling water when it comes to cast iron. Mom had a couple boiling water accidents and my aunt aunt (on dad's side) let her know the warm olive oil trick.
Warm the olive oil in the microwave till it is hot to the touch but not a blistering hot, then let it sit in the goop on the pan on the lowest setting on the burners (obviously an electric range not gas), and then use a non-metal utensil to scrape things off. Repeat as needed, then reseason after washing.

I did not know the olive oil trick. Good to know for future cleanings. Thanks!

Olive oil is a better way to get goopy crap off most pots/pans, even the old fashions 'sticks like glue' pots!

Can you deglaze it with booze like you can other pans?

We do not have booze. Otherwise I would. :-)

I hope you are able to fix it!

It's definitely looking better after seasoning yesterday. I'm going to do one more layer today and hopefully all will be well. :-)

If you can get it back it shape, next time scour it with salt. Dry salt and a nail brush.

Wouldn't that just scratch it all up? I thought the point of seasoning a cast iron skillet was to smooth out the surface to make it non-stick. *is confused*

My mom has her grandmother's cast iron spider; that's what she does to clean it.
