Insurance Companies Suck

This may possibly be TMI. Feel free to skip. I just need to rant.

So, I've had like gross, thick toenails for awhile now. I've tried every topical over the counter treatment and nothing works. So, I finally got fed up and went to see my doc today since one of the nails now has some weird black spots on it. Figured that wasn't a good thing. They were going to call in a prescription for the Lamisil antibiotic pill or whatever it is. It's three months of medication, but it should clear everything up. Well, our insurance won't cover the name brand OR generic. Seriously? WTF? Not covering the generic? You guys suck. I called Walgreen's to see if I could get the price to see how bad it would be without the coverage. The generic is $69.99 per month. I need three months of pills. Awesome. However, the slightly good news is that Walgreen's has a Prescription Club thing. It's a $20 one time fee and then prescriptions are only $10. So, it's probably still doable. But, I stand at Insurance Companies Suck.

Insurance = thank you for your premiums, but we ain't paying you squat.

This is really the first time I've ever had a problem like this with them. IMHO, prescriptions should always be covered in some manner because THEY HAVE TO BE PRESCRIBED BY A DOCTOR. It's not just random, willy-nilly, I'd like to try this medicine today. No, a doctor has deemed it medically necessary for me to take these drugs. Please let me have them. Bastards....

[identity profile] angstbunny.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I gotta admit that I haven't exactly been screwed over huge by insurance, like other people with legitimate beef. But like you said, it's a PRESCRIPTION.

I hear you. They won't cover my continued chiropractic care because according to them, I should be 'cured' after a certain amount of time.

Yes, insurance companies suck. They need to completely re-work how they do things...

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh* They're just so stupid sometimes.

Some time ago one of the vlogbrothers (http://www.youtube.com/user/vlogbrothers) announced that his insurance company was no longer covering his medication, and the company that makes the drug he needs for survival was increasing the cost. To an amount that would mean something like $600/mo. There was definitely a shitstorm.

Insurance companies really only care about their own profits, and conservatives are far too eager to help them maintain their bottom line.

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That is seriously ridiculous. What good are insurance companies if they're not going to come through with what they're there for? Boo.

[identity profile] littleheaven70.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that sucks!

I'm also miffed at insurance companies. Some guy hit my car from behind while I was stationery at the traffic lights, and because he gave false contact numbers, and didn't file a claim with his company in order for mine to recoup their losses, I get an "at fault" claim against my policy and lose my deductible and two years worth of my no-claim bonus. Even though the accident was not my fault, the fact that he ran off and never did the right thing makes it my fault. *shakes head* So mad right now.

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Now THAT is truly stupid. Isn't there a police report or something that can definitely say that you are not at fault? It's not YOUR fault the guy is a skeevy moron and won't own up to what he did. Grr....

[identity profile] gateruner.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh they definately suck! But I blame the drug companies first and foremost. It's a racket the whole deal. And what really gets me is that when a patent expires they will reapply for another one by changing one little molecule of a compound and give it some other little letter outside the name of the medicine and sell it for double over the price again!

Don't get me started, it's one of my pet peeves. And for someone like me, I HAVE to be on medication. Like a diabetic I have to have this medicine to function. Off the street, the cost is a staggering $525 a month! Thank God my insurance covers it, otherwise I don't know what I would do.

On the topic at hand though, I have heard good things about Lamisil, so it should get it knocked out. And that is good that Walgreens can offer you that option.

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
The people that NEED medication to live always seem to be the ones that get stuck with it. It's just awful. But, yeah, the drug companies are a HUGE part of this.

And it does sound like we can make it work, at least, with Walgreen's. So, that's something at least.

For someone who is now without medical coverage and has been denied coverage from the same company that covered me through my work but won't cover me under a private policy, I do have to say that insurance companies blow. When I was really sick in November and needed a nebulizer to better inhale my asthma medications my insurance company didn't cover it. So that was $70 out of my pocket. Good thing it's a one time cost.

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's so stupid. Can you file for COBRA? Or is that when they denied you?

[identity profile] erin-anderson.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No COBRA through TFI is like 600 a month, it's absurd. No I was just trying to get a private plan through BCBS of Kansas that would cost around $100 a month and I was denied because of my health history....

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep! That is absurd. Oy...

[identity profile] eviljr.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Damnnnnnnnnn, 69 bucks a month? Sorry to hear that. :(

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think it'll work out OK, though. *fingers crossed*

[identity profile] jillybiehn.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the exact same problem. Lamisil is on Wal-Mart's $4 prescription list.

[identity profile] switch842.livejournal.com 2011-03-08 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm.... I may have to check into that. Thanks!

[identity profile] jillybiehn.livejournal.com 2011-03-09 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
It''s the generic, turbinafine I think, but it worked. 3 months cleared my feet right up.
